“… A delight! Underneath the nose of fresh-turned soil and savoury notes of this fascinating Pinot there is a core of ripe cherries, brambly wild raspberries, integrate spice notes and a vein of County minerality. It’s expressive on the palate with more forward wild red berries, underlying herbs, spice, tingling acidity and complexity with smooth tannins and a long, lifted finish. A beauty!
Hand picked and hand destemmed, this Pinot Noir was coddled right from the day it began. The 2020 vintage was the 1st vintage and is a collaboration between friends between Trail Estate and Melville Road Vineyard, where long forgotten vines (first planted 17 years ago) have been brought back to health.
Clusters were extensively sorted and then rolled over a stainless steel plate with holes in it as a very gentle way of removing berry from cluster — a process taking hundreds of collective hours well into the night and eventually sunrise. The wine underwent a natural fermentation with gentle maceration prior to pressing. Put to older French oak barrels to age for 9 months. Bottle unfined and unfiltered.
This wine is all about poise, elegance and balance: rich black cherries and sweetness of red licorice mix with almonds and wild mushrooms. A velvety palate with smooth tannins carries this opulent wine through to the lingering finish.
